Add or remove titles in a chart
To add or remove titles in a chart in Excel, follow these simple steps:
1. Add a Title to a Chart
- Select the Chart: Click on the chart where you want to add a title.
- Go to the Chart Tools Tab: When the chart is selected, the Chart Tools tab will appear.
- Click the Design tab.
- Add Chart Title:
- In the Chart Elements button (a plus sign next to the chart), select Chart Title.
- Choose whether you want a Centered Overlay Title, Above Chart, or another option.
- Edit the Title:
- Click on the title to edit it directly.
- For example, if you want to title the chart “Monthly Sales,” type that text into the title box.
- Position the Title: You can move or resize the title by clicking and dragging.
2. Add Axis Titles
- Select the Chart: Click on the chart where you want to add axis titles.
- Go to the Chart Elements Button:
- Click the Chart Elements button (a plus sign next to the chart).
- Select Axis Titles.
- Choose Axis:
- Choose Primary Horizontal Axis or Primary Vertical Axis depending on which axis you want to title.
- Edit the Titles:
- Click on the text box that appears and enter the title (e.g., “Month” for the X-axis and “Sales” for the Y-axis).
- Format the Titles: Format the text size, font, and alignment as needed by selecting the title and using the formatting tools available under the Format tab.
3. Remove a Title
- Select the Chart: Click on the chart.
- Go to the Chart Elements Button:
- Click the Chart Elements button (a plus sign next to the chart).
- Uncheck the Title:
- Uncheck the box for Chart Title or the Axis Title that you want to remove.
4. Customize Chart Titles and Axis Titles
- You can also format titles by selecting them and using the Format tab to adjust:
- Font, Size, Alignment, and Color.
- Bold or Italic text.
- Text Fill and Text Outline options.
