Present your data in a Gantt chart

Creating a Gantt chart in Excel is a great way to visually track project timelines and task durations. Although Excel doesn’t have a built-in Gantt chart type, you can create one using a stacked bar chart with some formatting.

How to Create a Gantt Chart in Excel

Step 1: Prepare Your Data

Set up your data like this:

TaskStart DateDuration (days)
Task 16/15/20255
Task 26/20/20258
Task 36/25/20253
Task 46/28/20257

Step 2: Insert a Stacked Bar Chart

  1. Select your data range including Task names, Start Date, and Duration.
  2. Go to InsertBar Chart → choose Stacked Bar.

Step 3: Format the Chart to Look Like a Gantt Chart

  1. Right-click the Start Date series (the bottom bars).
  2. Select Format Data Series.
  3. Set Fill to No fill — this hides the start date bars, leaving only durations visible.
  4. Reverse the task order:
    • Click the vertical axis (task names).
    • Right-click → Format Axis.
    • Check Categories in reverse order.

Step 4: Adjust Dates on the Horizontal Axis

  • Right-click the horizontal date axis.
  • Choose Format Axis.
  • Set the Minimum bound to your project start date for better scale.

Optional: Customize Your Gantt Chart

  • Add data labels to show durations.
  • Change bar colors for different task statuses.
  • Add gridlines or milestones.
